The Bullitt Center (Seattle, WA) / The Miller Hull Partnership
O Bullitt Center é um edifício urbano de escritórios de alto desempenho demonstrando que uma estrutura comercialmente viável, com praticamente nenhum impacto ambiental é possível; é o maior projeto já certificado pelo Living Building. Indicadores de desempenho levaram a construção do projeto com todos os sistemas e materiais auto-sustentáveis. O edifício comercial de seis pavimentos e 16000 m2 foi avaliado nos quesitos energia, água e desperdício- resultando em índice inovador de intensidade lumínica de 10kbtu/ sf/ano. O desenho sustentável que responde ao contexto regional inclui janelas operáveis do chão ao teto para a entrada de luz e ar fresco durante o dia, esquadrias de madeira, uma escada transparente 'irresistível', com vistas espetaculares e uma cobertura que remete às construções vernaculares característica do noroeste. Como um novo paradigma para o projeto, o edifício serve de laboratório vivo para a arquitetura de alto desempenho e educação para sustentabilidade buscando influenciar a forma como a sociedade vê a relação de um edifício e o seu ambiente.
There are quite a few systems that make the Bullitt Center not only unique but one-of-a-kind. One of them is its rainwater collection system into a 56,000-gallon cistern where the water is then filtered and disinfected. Another are the two rows of five bright blue aerobic composters, each about the size of a Fiat 500, composting human waste so odorlessly and efficiently that the first compost extraction will not be required for 18 months. A third is the building’s rooftop array of photovoltaic panels, which extend far behind the building’s edge to produce around 230,000 kilowatt-hours a year – hopefully just the right amount of energy for a building that is already 83% more efficient than a typical commercial site in Seattle (which is really saying something).
